Avoid These Bergen County Towns If You Don’t Like Traffic Tickets
If you’ve ever wondered whether police in your town are more “ticket-happy” than their counterparts in other towns, you’re not alone. Until now, the number of Bergen County traffic tickets issued by each town was impossible to determine for the average person – and it was a subject of considerable speculation in some circles. However, New Jersey municipal courts have just released statistics that shed light on this issue. Which towns should you avoid if you don’t like traffic tickets?
Fort Lee Issued the Most Traffic Tickets
Between July of 2023 and June of 2024, Fort Lee issued the most traffic tickets of all towns in Bergen County. In total, Fort Lee wrote just over 52,000 traffic tickets – a lead of over 10,000 tickets for first place. Despite its top spot on the traffic ticket rankings, Fort Lee does not have the highest population among the towns of Bergen County. That honor goes to Hackensack.
However, Hackensack did not even reach second place in this contest. Instead, it falls in third place with under 40,000 traffic tickets – behind Garfield in second place. Teaneck also has a higher population compared to Fort Lee – and Teaneck did not even make the top 10 in the traffic ticket list. Fair Lawn is another town with a relatively high population in New Jersey, but this municipality was also absent from the top 10 list.
This suggests that the number of traffic tickets issued per town is only loosely correlated with its population. Although you might expect more traffic tickets for a town with a higher population, this is not always the case.
NorthJersey.com also noted that Fort Lee issued more traffic tickets than its total population. This is a stunning fact, and it means that its residents are extremely familiar with traffic tickets. Some people probably received numerous traffic tickets within the space of a year. There might also be a significant number of non-Fort Lee residents who received tickets during this period. Five other towns in the top five issued more tickets than their total population.
On the other end of the spectrum, many towns in Bergen County issued an extremely low number of tickets. One example is Park Ridge, which issued just 120 tickets all year. While Park Ridge has a much lower population compared to Fort Lee, this does not explain the dramatic reduction in tickets. With a population that is 25% the size of Fort Lee’s, you would expect Park Ridge to issue 25% of its tickets. Instead, Park Ridge issued 0.02% as many tickets.
